07.01.09 | ELLISON IN POLITICS MAGAZINE, 7.1.09 "Political Consulting in Black & White," by Shane D'Aprile: "In the long term, say others, diversifying the political industry isn’t just up to the party committees or the national parties themselves. Those who make up the current core of minority operatives will need to continue to build on their successes. “You can’t just rely on mainstream political institutions to do this,” says Charles Ellison, director at the Center for New Politics and Policy. A former congressional speechwriter, Ellison says there has to be more of an effort from within the black political community to groom young African-Americans for politics. He also points the finger at black media, which he says doesn’t focus enough on the business side of the industry. “It’s incumbent upon us to start discussing politics in the context of the business—what goes on behind the scenes.”
05.05.09 | KING IN THELOOP21, 5.5.09 Should federal judges look like the rest of society? Over the years, there's been a big debate in political science about the difference it makes if the people interpreting laws look like the rest of us. With the announcement of Justice David Souter's impending retirement from the Supreme Court, this question takes on added importance.
05.04.09 | ELLISON IN BLACKAMERICAWEB.COM, 5.4.09 From today's Blackamericaweb.com article titled "Speculation Begins on Obama's Supreme Court Pick" by Michael Cottman, 5.4.09: Charles D. Ellison, director for the Center for New Politics and Policy, said "conventional wisdom" might dictate that Obama would pick a Latino, a way to ease pressure from Latino groups feeling left out of his administration. "But, this is not a predictable president, if the past hundred days have taught us anything," Ellison told BlackAmericaWeb.com.

04.30.09 | ELLISON IN BLACKAMERICAWEB.COM, 4.30.09 Says Charles Ellison, director of the Center for New Politics: "Observers will make critical distinctions between President Obama's style and substance during these first 100 days. Overall, he's had a strong, solid start, with approval ratings high enough to offer the political capital needed to manage through some precarious times."
04.28.09 | MCALLISTER AT MYFOX CHARLOTTE, 4.28.09 President Obama closes a historic and action-packed first 100 days this week. When addressing the country in prime time, the president will highlight what he considers major accomplishments during his tenure so far. Even as he does this, I’m here to tell you – he’ll be missing the point.
04.17.09 | KING IN THELOOP21, 4.17.09 This week, President Barack Obama announced a shift, a subtle, but important shift, in American policy toward Cuba. First, he is lifting travel restrictions for Cuban-Americans with family still in Cuba. Second, he will allow unlimited transfers of money from Cuban-Americans to family still on the island. Third, Obama will allow American telecommunications companies — if Cuba allows it — to compete in the Cuban market.
04.13.09 | MCALLISTER AT MYFOX CHARLOTTE, 4.13.09 And what of the demands that President Obama laid out for our European allies during his trip? The calls to repudiate the North Korean launch were unanswered by the Chinese and Russians, two world powers at greater threat by North Korea’s actions than America is. NATO matching the increase of American resources in Afghanistan doesn’t appear likely at this time, either. Even the president’s statement about American arrogance in the world was not reciprocated by European admittance of anti-American sentiment abroad.
04.04.09 | MCALLISTER AT CHARLOTTE TEA PARTY, 4.4.09 The Charlotte Sweet Tea Party was held at Marshall Park in Charlotte, North Carolina on April 4, 2009. Lenny McAllister (www.lennymcallister.com) was a featured speaker at the event.
02.27.09 | BROOKS IN GOOD 5 CENT CIGAR, 2.27.09 As part of a new online public forum for foreign policy discussion, the University of Denver's Center for New Politics and Policy sought out the insights of University of Rhode Island political science professor Nicolai Petro on U.S.-Russian relations. 02.25.09 | ELLISON IN BLACKAMERICAWEB.COM, 2.25.09 Charles D. Ellison, senior fellow and chief advisor for the Center for New Politics and Policy at the University of Denver, told BlackAmericaWeb.com Tuesday that Obama’s address to Congress and his leadership since his inauguration supports several national polls that show most Americans approve of Obama’s vision for the nation. "Despite the massive challenges faced by the new president, he's maintained quite a bit of composure and ease over the past month - a quality that makes him rather strong and solid as commander-in-chief,” Ellison said.
02.24.09 | BROOKS IN EURASIAN HOME, 2.24.09 Unless a transformational figure emerges to capture the imagination and majority of Ukrainian voters in the January 2010 national elections, Kiev’s drift back to Russia will accelerate and the Orange Revolution will tragically perish in its infancy. Five years after millions of Ukrainians defiantly overturned a fraudulent election orchestrated in Moscow to usher in Victor Yushchenko’s reform movement, corruption is rampant, chaos reigns in government and nostalgia to re-establish bonds of affection with Russia is metastasizing across Ukraine.
02.23.09 | ELLISON IN BLACKAMERICAWEB.COM, 2.23.09 Charles Ellison, chief advisor and senior fellow for the Center for New Politics and Policy at the University of Denver, told BlackAmericaWeb.com that Obama’s focus on "urban affairs" is admirable given the most critical challenges: infrastructure, public health, economic development, education and crime. “These issues strike a strong personal chord with the president,” Ellison said. “It's a clear departure from the previous administration, which didn't appear to care very much about American cities while appeasing to a primarily suburban and rural base.”
02.20.09 | BROOKS IN CHERNOBYL & EASTERN EUROPE, 2.20.09 Webster Brooks has posted an interesting article in the Brooks Foreign Policy Review about the possibilities of a Yatseniuk presidency - “Can Arseniy Yatsenyuk Save Ukraine from Itself.” The article compares Yatseniuk to Barak Obama’s quick rise in the U.S. If you are interested in Ukrainian politics, this article is definitely a worthwhile read.

01.13.09 | KING IN THELOOP21, 1.13.09 Public opinion the last two years shows the American public relishing President Bush's last day in office. People are looking forward to a fresh start, but they also seem to recognize change might not be immediate. Our best chance for those quick changes come in the form of a legal maneuver at President-elect Barack Obama's disposal — the executive order, which the president issues to direct federal agencies under his control.
